The Center for the Study of Islam Democracy

Helbawy Abstract

Generally speaking, Muslims in the West have their roots in countries under authoritarian and tyrannical ruling systems. The people are broadly Muslims but the ruling systems are inhuman and not Islamic in many aspects. As a Muslim in the West I deeply appreciate most of the values and blessings of the democratic society and wish that Muslim countries were more like the UK or Europe in this respect. We believe that Islam clearly referred to Shura concept (consultation) and this is unfortunately missing from Muslim countries at present. As Muslims we believe that Shura is the essence of democracy.

We believe that the benefits of democracy are numerous and include human rights, freedom of speech, freedom of belief, and the peaceful transfer of power, independent judiciary, religious and cultural diversity. That is why Islamists feel safe and secure in such an environment.

God created us into different nations, tribes, people, ethnic groups and races to know each other, so as a Muslim I am fulfilling one of the many aims and objectives of my existence when I meet and know and work with other people to improve community relations. More broadly, living in a multi-cultural and multi-religious society enables us to appreciate our differences and overcome obstacles towards greater understanding.
